Software Engineering & Automation
Behind Roatán Websites is a working software engineer. If your business has outgrown spreadsheets and WhatsApp but a website isn't the problem, this is the page for that.
The Island Runs on Workarounds
Most businesses here aren't running on enterprise software, they're running on whatever worked well enough at the time: a notebook for stock, a shared spreadsheet for bookings, a WhatsApp group standing in for a real system. That's not a criticism, it's just what happens when custom software isn't realistically available locally. The gap shows up the same way across very different businesses:
Grocery & Retail
Stock counts on paper, no idea what's running low until the shelf is empty.
Hotels & Rentals
Bookings tracked across three different apps that don't talk to each other.
Import & Logistics
Shipments, customs paperwork, and inventory that only live in someone's head.
Contractors & Services
Quotes, materials, and job status tracked in a notebook or a dozen WhatsApp threads.
What I Can Build
Custom Software & Internal Tools
A simple tool built around how your business actually runs, replacing the spreadsheet or notebook that's currently holding it together.
Inventory & Stock Systems
Know what you have, what's low, and what to reorder, without a physical count every time.
Automating the Repetitive Stuff
Reports that build themselves, data entry that happens automatically, the boring tasks taken off your plate.
Practical AI Tools
Not a chatbot for the sake of it, things like auto-drafted responses, paperwork that reads itself, and reports that summarize themselves.
Where This Comes From
My day job is leading observability and platform engineering for a large tech company, the kind of work that means keeping thousands of cloud systems organized, searchable, and running without anyone noticing. The underlying skill is the same whether the "system" is a company's entire cloud infrastructure or one grocery store's stockroom: take something chaotic and hard to see into, and build something simple that just works. I'm not inventing that skill for the island, I'm applying it at a different scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
I don't have a technical team, is this too complicated for me?
No, that's the point. You run your business, I build the tool around it. You don't need to understand how it works underneath any more than you need to understand how a car engine works to drive one.
Right now I just use notebooks, spreadsheets, and WhatsApp. Is that normal to start from?
That's where almost everyone starts. The goal usually isn't to replace all of it on day one, it's to fix the one part that's actually causing pain, like not knowing what's in stock, or redoing the same report every week by hand.
Is AI actually useful for a small business, or is that just hype?
Depends what you mean by it. Generic chatbot plugins, mostly hype. Something that reads your incoming paperwork and files it correctly, or drafts a reply to a routine customer question so you're not typing the same thing for the twentieth time, that's real time saved.
How is this different from hiring a local IT person?
A lot of island IT support is hardware and networks, printers, wifi, computer repairs. This is software built from scratch for your specific business, the kind of work that normally means hiring a developer off-island or not getting it built at all.
